Benigna Marko has over 25 years of experience in public administration. While serving as an assistant director of administration and operations for the Miami-Dade County Department of Planning and Zoning, Benigna Marko formed an identification team that located working gasoline stations immediately after Hurricane Wilma hit. The service enabled the media, the county’s emergency center, and the 311 Information Center to inform citizens of the gasoline stations that were dispensing gas.
Hurricane Wilma was one of the worst hurricanes to occur during an extreme hurricane season. The year 2005 produced 28 storms. The high number forced weathermen to use the Greek alphabet to name storms, as there were no more names left on the regular naming chart used for tropical systems.
Wilma cost around $29.3 billion in damage in Florida. The storm killed over 64 people in total, including five in Florida. Starting in the Caribbean, it hit the Yucatan Peninsula and then made a hard right turn and headed straight for southern Florida.
People living on the southeast coast were caught unprepared and did not even have a chance to stock up on food. Around 98 percent of residents lost electricity in the southern Florida area.
As a result of the storm, a number of research projects were launched to better predict the rapid intensification of hurricanes.
